[Nov. 7th][Naruto][Painted Memory]

Title: Painted Memory
Day/Theme: 7. neglected souls
Series: Naruto
Character/Pairing: Namikaze Minato(Yondaime Hokage)/ femme!Uchiha Shisui
Rating: G

On this warm Obon night, Shisui lights the boats in succession, one, two, three, before she carefully blows out the match. Brushing the dirt from her midnight-blue yukata, obi tied appropriately for a young girl, she stands from her kneeling position at the bank. For a moment, she stares silently at the dark waters of the ever-flowing river, reveling in the cool feeling of grass and damp soil underneath her bare feet, and the rustling of the leaves in the night wind. There is a difference between being alone and being lonely, and Shisui has a carefully cultivated appreciation of the former, wariness for the latter.

She hears footsteps approaching behind her, and it takes her a moment to recognize Minato’s walk, unusually contained for once. The dark-haired kunoichi turns to face her teammate, who is carrying three of the small lantern-boats of his own. The Kanji for Namikaze is carefully written on two of them, but the third is blank on two panels, decorated with a frog and a swirl on the other two.

“You need to add something for him, Shisui.” Minato tells her. “Sensei and I already decorated our sides.”

Shisui nods, and passes Minato the matchbox to light his parent’s boats as she studies the third, thinking of what to add, for their comrade, lost too soon (always too soon). Respectfully, Minato turns his back even as he listens carefully to the sound of wet ink being brushed over rice paper.

By the time he has lit and sent the two boats out together Shisui is done. Together, they light the candle inside, and send it out to the sea, clasping hands without a thought as they watch the tiny boat inscribed with the frog, the swirl, and the three goldfish disappear over the river’s edge.
