[Oct 26] [Darker than Black] Meteor Shower
Title: Meteor Shower
Day/Theme: 26. while my darling one sleeps
Series: Darker than Black
Character/Pairing: Hei and Bai
Rating: G Spoiler for episode 23. One of the first Darker than Black fics I've written.
A girl stands alone ankle-deep in a pool of muddy water.
“Bai!”
She turns dead eyes to me. Eyes as devoid of expression as the lifeless corpses she's surrounded by. The eyes of a seasoned killer.
“Bai! Hold on! I'm coming.”
I run towards her, barely noticing the slippery rocks that turn underfoot. Rocks slick with blood from the pitched battle that took place just minutes before.
She looks tired. I see her wavering as she stands, eyelids grown too heavy to support. Bai. One of the deadliest Contractors around.
An insistent voice nags at me. I'm human. What am I doing here? Who am I to be fighting along side these super-powered beings? What was the Organization hoping I would do?
Still. I reach her just as she collapses bonelessly into my arms.
She's cool to the touch. Cooler than a normal human should be. Cold, like the blade of the Organization that she's become.
As I hold her close, blue eyes flicker open. For an instant, she looks like her old self, open and unguarded.
"Hei, many stars fell tonight."
Then she drifts off. To pay off her contract. Leaving me to stand guard. All around, the sky is streaked with silver tears that flash and shimmer before fading into darkness.

In my arms, she looks like the old Bai. Like the child who once earnestly asked falling stars to grant wishes. Innocent and unsullied, like the way she was before the contract. Before the contract which stained her hands with blood.
Then she drifts off. To pay off her contract. Leaving me to stand guard. All around, the sky is streaked with silver tears that flash and shimmer before fading into darkness.
