The father heard the strangers long before the sun started to go down. He shook his head sadly, but a grin pulled at his lips. On the one hand, the poor idiots wouldn’t see morning, on the other, it would be so satisfying to hunt and feed tonight.
His wife was sensitive to his moods and looked sideways at him. They traded an intense look and small smiles. The family had been here for 300 years. They themselves had been here for over 50. These outsiders were young and in unfamiliar territory.
Our territory, the father thought, a touch of anger twisting his smile. If they would leave us alone, leave our land alone, it wouldn’t have to come to this. His wife touched his arm lightly, distracting him. It didn’t matter. The strangers didn’t matter. Tomorrow they’d be gone.
