"Senel Cooldige. A diplomat." Will chuckled. "You know, if someone had told me this would happen a year ago, I wouldn't have believed them."
"Yeah, I know." Senel tugged at a sleeve. "I kind of don't believe it myself."
"But you've changed a lot." Will smiled. "I think you'll do well. Just as long as you remember to keep your temper in check."
"Yeah, yeah, I know." Just then, there was a knock at the door. "Who is it?" Senel called.
"The Merines, official Ferines representative to the Holy Kingdom of Rexalia," responded a deep male voice. "She will see you now."
Senel wanted to point out that this was his office, but he held his tongue. That was what diplomats did, wasn't it? "Tell her to come in."
Shirley was clad in the garb of the Ferines today; as she moved, the long train of her gown moved with her. "Thank you for granting me an audience," she said formally.
Will moved towards the door. "I suppose this is my cue to leave, then?"
"Ah, no," Shirley said, "you can stay--"
Will just smiled. "That's quite all right. I'll just leave you two alone." And just like that, he was gone.
Shirley stood awkwardly in the doorway. "Ah, I suppose I'm supposed to curtsey here, but..."
"No, you don't have to," Senel said quickly. "After all, we're...uh, we're..." He took a deep breath. "We're not in a position where we have to be so formal."
"Right." Shirley looked down. "I, ah, I came to offer my support. I know we'll have to work together to bridge the divide between the Ferines and Orerines."
"Oh. Um, thanks."
"I'm, um, I'm sure you've heard the accusations. About favoritism." She was looking down again.
Senel had. Whispers seemed to follow Shirley wherever she went. She was unfit for her job, they said. Her...affections for him blinded her to the harsh realities.
He knew that was unfair. Shirley always acted independently and made her own decisions. She didn't let him or anyone else stray her from the course she believed was right. "Yeah," he said. "I guess I'll be hearing that too now?"
Shirley's hands were tightly clasped. "People are so hostile," she said softly. "Even now, the Ferines and the Orerines find it hard to trust each other. To accept each other."
She looked up. "I want to change that. I want to create a world where everyone can live in peace. Where the Ferines and the Orerines walk hand-in-hand. Will you help me, Senel? I know we can make that dream come true."
She reached for his hand. He didn't pull it away.
"Yeah," he said. "I'd like that."
