[Sept. 26, 2007][Avatar] Work to Relax
Title: Work to Relax
Day/Theme: Sept. 26, 2007 "Your hair was long when we first met"
Series: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Character/Pairing: Kuei, Sheh Ron, Hua
Rating: PG
Kuei and Bosco hung about Hua while she did her housework like small children follow their mother. Of course, Hua didn't mind except when they got in the way of her sweeping.
Sheh Ron showed up at the house as Hua was starting dinner. The burly man's hands were caked in reddish brown clay, which also flecked his arms and face. His clothes were clean and his sleeves rolled up past his elbows. Kuei assumed he must wear something else, at least an apron, while working.
"I'll take a bath before we eat," he declared to his daughter.
She did not turn away from her cooking. "Do you want me to help heat the water?"
"No," he waved a hand dismissively, "You keep on that. I'll take care of this myself." The potter glanced at Kuei and raised a thick eyebrow as he evaluated the traveler once more. "How about you come and help me and you can get cleaned up too."
Kuei had a feeling that this was one of those situations where it was impolite to disagree. And he was tired of being dusty and wearing the same unwashed clothes day after day. "Yes, please."
He followed Sheh Ron out behind the house to a wooden bath house. Without the prior knowledge of what they were going to do, Kuei would have guessed it was a toolshed. Sheh Ron started a fire while his visitor hauled the buckets of water. The wooden buckets soaked up the water, growing heavier each time he passed from the stream to the tub. The buckets smacked hard against his side and splashed water on his tunic and pants, making them stick to his skin.
By the time the village chief was satisfied with the amount of water in the tub, the fire was crackling brightly and Sheh Ron was fanning it softly, adding a twig or two more at a tme to the hungry flames and testing the water's temperature with his fingertips. "You should rinse off and get in first. It'll take me longer to get off this dried muck."
Kuei felt uncomfortable undressing in front of a man he had only just met that morning. He was careful to set his spectacles in his floppy turban where they were less likely to be stepped on. His long, dark braid fell down his back. At least the head covering had kept his hair from getting too dirty.
"That's one fancy braid" Sheh Ron commented in mild surprise. "You didn't strike me as such a high class guy. I mean, same name as the Earth King had, but you look like you came from the circus."
"I like the circus," Kuei thought.
"But don't mind the musings of a nosy old man," the potter shrugged, "I'm just making observations."
