"Has it always been like this?"

"Like what?" the girl wondered, popping in with a piece of dried fish in her hand. It looked rather old and hard, but Bosco still drooled at the sight.

Kuei paused, not sure how to put it. It didn't seem polite to say as poor, as dreary, or as dusty as this.

Hua saved him the trouble of deciding. She dropped the bit of fish squarely into Bosco's gaping jaws. "Sorry that's all we've got. You might be able to fish something out of the river though. My father's not really that keen on fishing." She wiped her hands on her white apron. "The village hasn't ever been much different in my lifetime, but I'm not that old. I'm sure the healing woman on the hill house remembers the old days before the Fire Nation had advanced this fare."

She sat down on the floor and leaned against the table. "The older folk tell how there were once Earthbenders here. Soh Jang Village used to be know for the amazing pottery the Earthbenders created. They could mold a vase without touching it, merely twisting the clay through their will. But these peaceful potters were called away by the demands of war to go forth and defend the nation with their talents. Not a single one came back and the Fire Nation continued their advance. People forgot the name of Soh Jang and this became like any other nameless village, tediously adrift in the sea of occupation."

Hua sighed. "My father hates to talk about it. There were benders in our family. That's why we're potters."

Kuei trembled slightly. If every village in his kingdom had a story like this, what a terrible tragedy the war had been. He wondered if his father had known about the war and done anything about it. He hoped so. His own record was more than lackluster.

"Where are you headed to?" Hua asked, trying to leave the somber tale behind.

"Um, nowhere in particular. I'm just going to travel the world," he admitted candidly.

The girl laughed, her freckled face dimpling, "Just wherever? You really think this is a safe time to be doing that?"

"Well," Kuei folded his hands, "Now is the only time I have."

The pigtailed girl's face grew downcast again as she saw the truth in his words. "I guess you're right. It's not going to get any easier from here." Her forehead creased with her frown. Bosco rubbed roughly against her shoulder. Hua put her arms around his furry neck.
