[September 24] [Avatar: the Last Airbender] Quirks
Title: Quirks
Day/Theme: September 24: The sudden wave of silver born in you
Series: Avatar: the Last Airbender
Character/Pairing: Mai/Zuko; Aang, Iroh, Toph
Rating: G
"I think," Zuko said in one of the dramatic fits he was accustomed to, even more so when his daughter was involved, "that this is a bad idea. We should call the whole thing off."
"That will really get the Fire Nation in good graces," Mai said, not even looking up from the book she was reading, "world domination is easily forgotten."
"But -"
"Who is Azula again?"
Zuko had to admit she had a point. "What about Uncle?"
"He's essential to the negotiations, seeing as people actually trust him for helping the Avatar at great cost to himself," Mai said in her 'I can't believe I even have to explain this to you' voice.
While Zuko was constructing a reply to that, Mai stood up and walked over to him. After dropping a kiss on his neck she said, sweetly, "We could always ask Ty Lee."
"Aang it is," Zuko said quickly. Last time Ty Lee baby-sat his daughter, he came home to find her showing off her torso and wearing make up.
Never again.
-
"Zuko," Iroh said, "I urge you to calm down."
"How can I calm down?" Zuko snapped, "Aang should have been here ten minutes ago and we're running late and Ty Lee isn't even here for back up and I knew this was a bad - "
"Sorry I'm late!" Aang said breathlessly as he followed Mai into the room.
"Lost track of time?" Zuko said, giving him his best glare.
As usual, Aang didn't seem to notice. "No, I just had to help some kid who got lost."
Zuko scowled because he really couldn't get angry with Aang over that.
"Where's Keiko?" Aang asked eagerly. "I promised to show her proof that you didn't hire one of the best body guards ever to watch over Mai during labor because she came in wearing green and green is supposed to be bad luck for babies."
"Sent her away right on the spot," Iroh said, grinning.
"Called for cleansing incense," Mai added.
"Excuse me for wanting to make sure my daughter had the best," Zuko said and he didn't pout. Really.
"Weren't you just panicking about being late?" Mai said, nudging Zuko towards the exit. "Keiko is in her room, Aang."
"Make sure to tell her that he made everyone wear pink clothing Ty Lee had specially made!" Iroh told Aang in a stage whisper as he followed Mai and Zuko out of the room.
"Uncle!"
"Oh, she believed that," Aang said airily.
-
"Uncle Aang!" Keiko said happily, running across the room to give him a hug.
"Remember when you asked for proof about the green body guard?" Aang said. "I have it!"
"Where?" Keiko said, bending over to look behind Aang's back, as if she was expecting something to be there.
"She's going to meet us here," Aang said, "in about an hour."
"What will do until then?" Keiko asked.
"Practice Firebending?" Aang offered.
"Dad says I shouldn't without him here," Keiko said, frowning.
"What does your mom say?" Aang said.
"Just don't ruin my good clothes," Keiko said.
"Well then," Aang said, setting his hand on her shoulder and guiding her out of her room, "we should listen to her. In fact, you probably should generally."
Keiko nodded distractedly; it wasn't the first time she'd heard that. She doubted it would be the last. She honestly didn't like thinking about it too much or too hard.
-
"Hey, twinkle toes," Toph said, dodging the flame darted at her easily from Keiko, who was shocked by her sudden entrance. "That better have been the twerp, or I'm gonna have to kick your butt for that mistake."
"You're Toph," Keiko said, her eyes widening. "The best earth bender ever."
"Better believe it," Toph said and plopped down on the ground.
"And my dad turned you down?" Keiko sounded awed. "Because you were wearing green?"
"Have you ever meet your father?" Toph asked. "And more to the point, got anything good to eat? I'm starving."
Keiko was beginning to believe her father was a fool. Remarkably well-adjusted as she was, considering, on top of adoring her father, she had lived eight blissful years overlooking some of her fathers' dramatics as quirks, not a defining part of him.
She filed that away to think about later. Right now, she wanted to enjoy being with her Uncle Aang and someone as awesome and Toph. Because, even the princess of the Fire Nation didn't get to see someone as powerful and famous as Toph often.
-
"Daddy," Keiko said later that night at dinner. "I think you are a fool." There was really no other conclusion to come to after spending a day hearing about all about her father from Toph and Ungle Aang, along with thinking about how her father acted, in general, as much as she did love and think the best of him.
Her mother snorted in her water; she made no secret that she enjoyed that her daughter took after her in bluntness.
"What?" Her father was clearly trying to sound angry, but instead he sounded hurt.
"A sweet and well-meaning one, though," Keiko said solemnly.
"If you think that," Uncle Iroh said, "you should hear about some of the dates he took your mother on. I've often considered writing a book on it; a guide of what not to do to get a lady friend."
"Tell me some stories!" Keiko said, forgetting about her food and looking at her uncle with great eagerness.
"Start with how he proposed to me," Mom said, her lips twitching into a smile-smirk.
"My life is filled with never-ending pain and no one appreciates me," Zuko said, though Keiko noted that there wasn't much heat in his voice and he was smiling a bit, despite himself.
