And I'm continuing...

"That name seems so familiar," Sheh Ron muttered to himself, "But I just can't put my finger on it..."

Yes, he was Kuei. It had been a very long time since his mother and father had called him by that name.

"Wonderful," Hua smiled, lighting up her freckled face, "And what did you say was the bear's name?"

"Bosco."

"He may not have any weapons, but he could still be a bender," Sheh Ron ventured, unwilling to let the traveler off so easily, "And bears are still dangerous."

"No, not Bosco," Kuei spoke up, "He's a pet. He doesn't know the first thing about being a wild bear. He's really very gentle."

"Well," the chieftain said, still gruff and without trust, "Let's hope he's as you say." The gray-eyed man waved at the gathered villagers, whose faces were beginning to soften around the edges. "Forget about this guy. Everyone get back to work."

The other villagers moved away at various speeds depending on their level of interest in the newcomer. Some of the previously frightened children came back outside to take a look. A woman went back to noisily beating a rug outside her home.

"There anything we can do to get you on your way faster?" Sheh Ron asked. "Like another sandal?"

Kuei felt somewhat embarrassed. He'd had no idea that Bosco would be regarded with fear and suspicion. He was almost ready to leave now without so much as a bite to eat and try again in some other village.

"I'll take care of him," Hua volunteered. "I'm sure all he needs is a good meal and a place to spend the night."

Sheh Ron was not as enthusiastic as his daughter, but he had work to do and was not in the mood to argue with her. "Do as you like," he shrugged, "Just don't let anyone get hurt."

"Of course not," she reached out to pat Bosco's head. The brown bear rolled over happily.

"Bosco loves to have his stomach scratched," Kuei explained pleasantly.

Sheh Ron's eyes widened. He raised a thick eyebrow. "Well, you might be right about that bear after all," he acknowledge, heading back to work on his pottery.

"Oh, that's so cute!" Hua squealed, rubbing Bosco's stomach with both hands. "I could just pet you all day!" she told the bear sweetly. Bosco whistled cheerily in appreciation. Hua swung her head around, pigtails flying, to look up at Kuei. "He whistles?"

"Yes, he never growls," he answered.

"I love you, Bosco!" the potter's daughter chirped, "You're so amazing!" She gave the bear one last scratch and got to her feet. "Let's get you both something to eat," she decided, getting back to business.
