[Sept. 22, 2007][Avatar] Vigilant Village
Title: Vigilant Village
Day/Theme: Sept. 22, 2007 "Your spectrum's a to z"
Series: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Character/Pairing: The Earth King, Bosco
Rating: G Slight spoilers for what the Earth King does in the first Season 3 episode.
Probably continued later this month(?)
The Earth King had set out with high hopes to experience the world as an average man, determined to find the knowledge to be a better king, but that had been a week ago. He hadn’t seen a single person the whole time. Bosco had done his best to keep him warm and provide company, but it was still strange. The wandering king had never gone even a day without human companionship before. Since he had parted ways with the Water Tribe warriors he had been hungry, tired, dirty, cold, and generally uncomfortable. He didn’t have the stamina to travel very far in one day, but he certainly hoped he would reach civilization soon. A town, a village, a hamlet, or ramshackle hut! Anything would do at this point.
He was almost tempted to turn around and head back to where he and Sokka had parted ways and ask the Water Trive to leave him off somewhere with more people, but he knew that they would already be gone. “And that would be cheating,” he told himself. An ordinary man would have it make it on his own.
He was fortunate that the weather was warming up. At least he wasn’t making this journey in the winter. “Mrr,” Bosco grunted and stopped his methodical lumbering forward.
“A village!” his master cheered, hopping down from Bosco’s back to rush towards the line of tiny houses. Bosco ran along happily beside him.
A trio of small children scattered before the pair, dashing off shouting to their parents. “Bear! There’s a bear!”
Villagers peered suspiciously at him through windows, clutching their children tight. The Earth King stopped and looked around. Several of the braver men came towards him threateningly. “Is that your bear, stranger?”
“Yes, this is Bosco,” he explained candidly, “We’re on a journey across the Earth Nation.”
The tallest man, bulky, with a dark, bushy beard stepped forward and looked the skinny ruler over from his one bare foot to his covered head. “You don’t look in much shape for traveling,” the man scowled.
“Father, honestly!” came a girl’s voice. She pushed her way through the men to stand beside the leader. Hands on hips she confronted her father about the matter, “Father, you know how much our country has gone through just as well as the rest of us. Show a little kindness to a wretched traveler!”
She turned to the Earth King with a gentler look on her face, “I’m sorry. Everyone has been under a lot of stress lately due to the movements of the Fire Kingdom. We just heard about the fall of Ba Sing Se, so we have to be on the lookout for trouble. I’m Hua, and this is my father, Sheh Ron, the chief of the village. What’s your name?”
He opened his mouth, then paused before speaking. He was not “the Earth King” now, he was… “I’m Kuei.”
