The setting sun stained the paper walls a pale red. One was brighter than the others, because somebody had lit a candle just behind it.
Hisana carefully tucked her feet underneath her as she sat and looked up at the ceiling.
He took off the hand guards one at a time, undoing the ties at his wrists and slipping them over his fingers. He was already out of uniform, the starched black of a working shinigami replaced by an unassuming pale green.
Byakuya paused and looked through the open doors, shifting Sebonzakura, tucked under his arm. A moon rose just above the edge of the horizon, edged in the fading red sunlight.
