[August 22] [Full Moon wo Sagashite] The Moon and the Sun
Title: The Moon and the Sun
Day/Theme: 08-22-05/This red, red moon
Series: Full Moon wo Sagashite
Character/Pairing: Izumi/Meroko
Rating: G
[Contains spoilers for the entire manga series]
She sees the red heavens upon her departure. The wind goes by and the sky seems clear tonight, but there is no moon in her eyes. He stays still and she’s the one running, darting for an escape—from his looks, his touch, his reach.
So cruel as his love is, she crashes into the abyss of regret. A stab in the heart becomes real and it feels like ice, cold and ruthless, yet it burns like the phoenix in her dreams. Her hands hover to grasp what she has lost (oh, she is losing many things by the second) only to hear the empty city’s answer of scorn.
She lost a chance of living by love but she’s falling for the second time; she wonders if this is a cost, a price to pay. The cold air dries her tears and along with it comes an empty promise.
She will never love again.
.
Her light shifts and shines down on a new companion. The name Takuto rolls off her tongue and escapes her lips, her eyes glimmering in sheer joy as she makes her endless confessions. The declarations never seem to reach the boy but she believes it will come to him someday.
He watches in the shadows as she smiles and notices how her cheeks blush and how her eyes move about, more than simply distracted from her duty by a mere presence of a new partner. He feels his own eyes harden, hears the small ghost speak next to him (she’s gone, Izumi, she’s long gone), and his world retreats into the night, embracing the darkness that no longer has the sun.
.
He looks into her eyes and tells her he’d win her again. It is the first time he gazes on her so boldly, because glancing away from her bright morning rays has always been a habit (she was too radiant for him, he wasn’t worthy to face such light without shame).
She only replies by saying harsh words. She tries so hard, she pretends like it is the truth, though he knows—she wavers, she drifts between lovers, the old and the new. He also sees the scars he left behind; he notices the hollow gaps in her whenever she speaks to him, the sadness that lies behind the eyes that once shined for him.
I will die twice to get her back, he thinks, to have her by my side.
.
In the end, they’re sitting together atop a building while listening to that girl’s song, watching their two human friends unite with disbelief and overpowering emotions. He glances at her to take in their matching clothes, and his mouth curves into a small smile.
Sometimes he still can’t believe it—he has to hold her in his arms to know she’s back after the battles they fought and hardships they went through. He has put her at risks and yet she says she doesn’t have regrets anymore, giving him a full grin he can’t ever show.
In the hours of joy below on earth their lips connect into something sweet, something more than a simple love.
She loves again. He lives again.
The End.
