[September 19] [Holes] along the shoulder

Title: along the shoulder
Day/Theme: September 19 / the hustle and bustle of the traffic greets you
Series: Holes
Character/Pairing: Stanley, Zero
Rating: G

Hector lives in one of those older houses, not bundled into a neighborhood, but right against a road, one that has unexpectedly grown large in the decades since the house was built. Stanley rings the doorbell twice, leaning casually against a porch post.

Hector is the one who answers it. "Hey," he says, and the tiniest flicker of a smile flits across his face.

"Hey." Stanley grins. As he trudges across the front lawn (if it can even be called a lawn), Hector falls into step beside him. They walk together on the shoulder of the road--it's not exactly ideal, but better than walking through the waist-high patches of weeds. Stanley doesn't say much of anything, and neither does Hector.

After about half a mile, buildings start appearing along the sides of the road. They reach an intersection. Stanley presses the button for the crossing and hurries over as soon as the light changes; he dislikes seeing the cars rushing towards him from all sides, stopping only as they approach the crosswalk.

Hector follows, naturally.

It is two more blocks before Stanley pulls him aside, motioning to the little ice cream shop on the corner. "Want some?" he asks.

Hector blinks. "..okay."

The shop is clean and well-kept, but there's a definite sense of datedness about it; perhaps it's the brown-and-off-white coloring of the tables and floor. "Two, please," Stanley says to the girl behind the counter, who looks bored and very much like she's only doing this for her $5.50 an hour. "Chocolate and...what do you want, Hector?"

Hector smiles in that strange way of his. "Chocolate's fine."

Weeks pass, months pass, and it becomes a routine soon enough: the two of them walking, not with any destination in mind, but for the sake of walking (together, though neither one says it aloud.) Stanley doesn't think much of it.

For the two of them, it is normal.
