September 16: PotC 3. 'Count to Ten'
Title: Count to Ten
Day/Theme: September 16: Why do you keep counting?

He had watched her mark off every day of his whole life. His mother might go all day without looking at the homemade calendar, but when evening came and the day cooled, her eyes would find it. They would linger there a moment and then go to the sea.
She would mark off the day before she sent him upstairs. After he had gone to bed, he could sometimes hear the pages of the calendar rustle as she flipped through them. Sometimes, she would cry a little.
When he was old enough to understand, she explained that at the end of the calendar, his father would come home. He learned his numbers, counting with her. He could count higher than any of the other children, because he had ten years to count off. When he was tall enough, she let him mark off the day before he went to bed.
And always, they watched the horizon.
