“Where do you go?” Yumie asked finally. Heinkel looked at her through the dark sunglasses and lit a cigarette. Yumiko would have assumed the best and hesitated to confront Heinkel over anything. Yumie was anything but hesitant. Her dark eyes bored into the sunglasses lenses.
“It’s a private little pilgrimage of mine,” Heinkel tried to shrug it off. “Promises I made long ago.”
“Does the chief know?”
“Of course! I go every year.” Heinkel hoped she sounded casual. Yumie’s expression narrowed another fraction.
“In Germany? Your accent sounds a little stronger.”
“I keep telling you, Yumie…” Heinkel fought back her irritation. “You’re the one with an accent, not me.”
Silence fell between the two for a long moment. Heinkel finished her cigarette and ground it out. When Yumie spoke again, her voice was milder, more like Yumiko’s.
“Well, I’m glad you’re back. The leaves are red and we have a job coming up in the mountains. It’ll be nice to go with company.”
Heinkel looked at her sideways. The voice was gentler, but the eyes still held a glint. She wasn’t out of the woods yet.
