[Sept. 14, 2007][Suikoden] Host vs. Parasite

Title: Host vs. Parasite
Day/Theme: Sept. 14, 2007 "This road is all you'll ever have"
Series: Suikoden
Character/Pairing: Ted and the Souleater
Rating: PG

Ted was distraught. There had been another death and the culprit seemed to be none other than the Souleater. He held his gloved right hand behind his back and refused to look at it. Of course, as his connection to the rune was much deeper than that, this action had little effect.

"Ha," the rune scoffed at him, "Turn away from me if you must, but that won't save them. It won't save you either in the end."

Ted kept walking and clenched his fingers into a fist with his hand still behind his back. It was useless to pretend he didn't hear the rune. It wasn't like a person you could drown out by going, "La la la, I can't hear you," in your head. It was an inescapable part of him, like a loud-mouthed parasite. Perhaps some of its attitude came from what it knew to be his feelings toward it.

"You know that you can never keep anyone who loves you, don't you?" it taunted him. He was all alone in the world. The Souleater knew his weaknesses. "The road is all you'll ever have!"

Ted whipped his hand around, gazing at it angrily. The Souleater was right. As long as it was his, this was to be his fate. He would wander the lands to hide from Windy's long-fingered grasp and to keep from becoming too attached to anyone and bringing their doom. At times, he would settle for a short while in one village or another to build back lost strength and make a little money to finance his traveling. Most of the time he was little more than a bum. It was a tiring, lonely, and dirty life. ...At least on the Mist Ship he had been clean.

"You have no rebuttal?" the Souleater continued to pester him. "Not even a foolish or uninformed one?"

Ted came to a sudden halt. He concentrated hard so as to make his next statement as forceful and firm as it could be without yelling it for the whole world to hear.

"Just shut up," he commanded.

The entire energy of the run seemed to dim and it made no reply. Ted sighed with relief and let his hand drop down to hang at his side. He began to walk once more, picking up his pace casually to his earlier rolling speed. Now, with the Souleater silenced, he felt more sincerely alone and compared to the tortures, both major and minor, it inflicted on him, Ted felt loneliness was something he could handle.
