He didn’t want to believe it. It was the voice that whispered from lonely campfires and haunted empty crossroads. It told him he belonged there, alone.

He didn’t want to be alone! He was sick of being alone! He had spent most of his life alone. He wanted what everyone else had. He wanted a place to belong to. Somebody to be with him.

Why then, the voice whispered, do you run from every chance to get it? Every time it looks like you might have one of the things you wish for, you bolt like a deer. You use every excuse, you blame everyone in reach, and you run. You run, and you don’t stop until there’s no chance of finding your way back.

He would try to argue, but the wind and fire and empty road had beaten down sterner wills than than his.

You always come back to this, because this is what you have. This is where you belong. This is who will be with you.
