[Sept. 11, 2007][Suikoden] Name Preference
Title: Name Preference
Day/Theme: Sept. 11, 2007 "Your name begins with a distinct color"
Series: Suikoden
Character/Pairing: Hugo, Sasarai, "Noel"
Rating: G
The new ambassador to the Grasslands was young and slim. Hugo had been rather pleased to read in a letter from Sasarai that the youth's father had been a border citizen from Gachtz. He would still be a Harmonian, but hopefully he'd understand western ways better and wouldn't stick out like a sore thumb the way the past ambassador had even after getting a slight tan.
"Good afternoon, Chief," he smiled as he entered the village.
Hugo got up from the grass to welcome the boy. "I'm Hugo. Nice to meet you."
"I'm Sasarai," the Harmonian replied, shaking his hand heartily, "But please call me Noel."
"Sasarai?!" Hugo blurted out, "The same as the bishop?!"
The younger Sasarai looked both embarrassed and resigned, as though he was asked this question often. "Yes, I'm named after him. My parents are, well, big fans of his. But I think it's just too embarrassing. It's a sort of weird name, so I like to be called Noel instead."
Hugo smiled and tried not to give the impression that he was laughing at Noel instead of with him. "Then, why Noel?" he asked.
Noel shrugged, "No particular reason. I just like the name. It's low key."
"I get it," the chieftain nodded sagely, showing some of the years behind the face that made him appear Noel's peer. "...But," Hugo still couldn't help but inquire, "What did the bishop think of your name?"
"My parents told him about it when I was just a baby. But he did seem kind of amused when we met again," Noel sighed, "I think he was as miffed as me, to tell you the truth. It must be strange for people to name their son after you."
The Karayan wrinkled his nose. He was glad that no one in his tribe had come up with a similar idea. Noel was right, it was just too weird. "Anyway, thanks for bearing with me there. Now that I've got that out of my system, please come and take a look around the village."
As they toured the village, Hugo was careful to always introduce Sasarai as "Noel," much to the ambassador's relief, but after Noel had fallen asleep following the informal banquet held for him, Hugo could not help but his let his mother in on the Harmonian's secret.
"How terrible!" she laughed, "Isn't one Sasarai enough for this continent?"
