The ice sculptures never aged. They melted, of course, eventually, but the image of the dancing girl was always young. Her expression changed a little, sometimes smiling, sometimes wistful, but always beautiful.
He never saw her again. He didn’t age as she did, but it never occurred to him that she would be changing somewhere. He didn’t imagine what she might be doing or where she might be. He didn’t dream of her ever coming back to him.
All he had was the image of the time they had had. He created it over and over, in ice and shrub and paper, an image of the girl and the love that didn’t age.
