[Sept. 7, 2007][Suikoden IV] Personal Aesthetic
Title: Personal Aesthetic
Day/Theme: Sept. 7, 2007 "You look a little bit older, a little bit colder"
Series: Suikoden IV
Character/Pairing: Gareth
Rating: G
Gareth found that the most pleasant part of graduating from his master's tutelage was that he was now free to sculpt, engrave, or create whatever he wanted. Somedays he woke up inspired, with the image of a coiling morning glory perfect for a brooch glittering in his mind, and other days he was content to take on commissions from Lord Reinbach or whoever was interested and able to pay.
Gareth's thick fingers were agile, and he was adept at making the tiny adjustments necessary to form a plain piece of wire into the gentle curl of a wisteria vine. He squinted when he worked on small pieces of jewelry, focusing intently on each miniscule detail. He smiled as he worked too, and if he was overly absorbed, the tip of his tongue would slip out to poke slightly through his lips.
The Reinbachs loved his often excessively flowery style. "Ah, this is exquisite!" the young master would gasp, stroking the smooth stone of Gareth's most recently completed sculpture. His wide eyes filled with joy as he looked over the nearly nude youth the sculpture portrayed kneeling to pluck a flower. Gareth's heart welled up with pride in response to this open adoration. His teacher had chided him for his "effeminate style" and "obsessive concern for detail."
"Enough curlicues and flower petals!" the old man would snap, striking Gareth's sketch with his ruler. Gareth, with his spiky short hair and thick eyebrows, was a serious student who found himself both hurt and frustrated by these heavy-handed critiques. He wanted to please his teacher, but he wanted to satisfy himself more. He hated being told that something that was merely a matter of personal taste was a defect in his work. He would clench his fingers tightly around his pencil as though he wished to break it as he erased his magnificent details away.
He did not deny that his teacher had showed him many technical skills, but he had done nothing to influence Gareth's personal style. That flowery realism was entirely a product of his own preferences and now he sought only to share his art with those who shared, or at least accepted, his aesthetic. So for the Reinbachs, who understood him, he made the rose brooch- his masterpiece.
