When Jay returned to his apartment, Norma was lying on his bed.
"Hey, JJ. Long time, no see."
"Norma..." Jay stopped short. "What, exactly, are you doing here?"
"What, I can't drop by to see an old friend?" Norma grinned and stretched out.
"...get off my bed."
"Mean," Norma said, but she clambered off the bed anyway. "Senny says hi, by the way. And sorry, but he's been saying that for the past two years."
"I couldn't care less what Senel says."
"Uh-huh." Norma propped herself up on one elbow and gave him a look. "Quit mooning over him and Red and come to see us, will you? Teach worries about you. So does C."
"I happen to be busy," Jay retorted pointedly. "I have important business here. And I have been to see the Orosoren."
"Yeah, like a year ago." Norma rolled her eyes. "Look, it's not really any of my business how you act, but quit making excuses, will you? You're avoiding us, and you know it."
"There's nothing to avoid."
"Sure there is. Your ex, the guy who accused you of killing his girlfriend..."
Jay's mouth was pressed in a thin line. "Do you actually have a purpose here, are or you merely making this visit to heckle me?"
"Speaking of Shirl," Norma continued, as if she hadn't heard him, "C gave me this. She wants to talk to you about her."
"There's nothing to say. Shirley's dead."
"Hey, don't look at me." Norma shrugged. "I'm just the messenger. I figure there's no point in dwelling on the past, right? What happens, happens. But C's always been an idealist. She wants things to be right again."
"She's a moron, you mean."
Norma laughed. "Don't act like you aren't like that too, JJ. We all believed in happy endings. That's what we fought for, wasn't it?"
There was a long silence.
"...are you quite finished?" Jay said.
"...yeah. See you around, okay?" Norma set the letter in her hand down, and left, without looking back, though she might have paused--it was only a moment--before closing the door.
Jay resisted the urge to watch her go. Instead, he strode over to the bed, and after a moment's hesitation, picked up the letter.
