[Sept 7] [Labyrinth] On the Surface
Title: On the Surface
Day/Theme: Sept 7: you look a little bit older, a little bit colder
Series:Labyrinth
Character/Pairing: Sarah/Jareth
Rating: PG
When she had been a child, he had seemed unreachable, even when he was offering to place himself in her hands. He had stood high in a castle, far away through a labyrinth, outside her window, outside her reach. Now that she was grown enough to understand the havoc he had thrown her teenaged imaginings into, he didn't seem so ancient and unknowable.
What was he anyway? She had wondered about that. How had he come to be King of the Goblins? Where had his powers over reality itself come from? What was he??
She had wondered if once upon a time, maybe the goblins hadn't stolen a little child named Jareth away, and then lost him again in their own labyrinth. Maybe he had grown up weird and wise in the tunnels and corridors until he had attuned himself to it, and could control and rule it. Maybe in the beginning there had been the labyrinth and Jareth had come to being somewhere in the castle at the center like a bird from an egg of layered mysteries. Maybe in the beginning there had been only Jareth, and he had spun the web of the labyrinth out around him to snare in the goblins to his service and lost girls into his arms.
Time had cooled most of the things she had felt that night. Not all of them. She still kept a crystal ball by her bed. She never quite got the taste for peaches back. But, she thought, looking at her older self in the mirror, She might be a match for him now. If he came calling. If it was her that called. No less dazzled, of course, but able to pretend otherwise.
She was older now. On the surface, she could be cool and smooth, just like his crystals. This time, he would have to look much closer to see what swirled within.
