By the time she was ten she knew more of the palace’s covert passages, invisible locks, and various other architectural duplicity than anybody had for century. She’d crossed the splintered floors of obsolete ballrooms, made peace with withered, stunned ghosts buried in the dust, and written, and dutifully erased, her name in the antique ashes of cold forges and mute fireplaces.
She found that you could tell a lot about a place by the secrets it kept.
Bouncing on the Dark Ace’s bed when the door opened, she found the look on his face the most telling secret of all.
