It was the promise of a special assignment that had lured Oulan to say in Harmonia instead of returning to work and wanderings abroad. Through a special messenger she had received a request from one of the Counsel members. Due to her strong political views that differed from those of most of her colleagues, the priestess Kirsten Leipzig felt that she was in need of protection.

Oulan wandered through the city, Crystal Valley, taking in sites once familiar from the days she had cut her teeth here working as a bodyguard and a contact for the inspectors. Some of the buildings had changed, but many more had stayed the same since her journey south. Her darling Susan was probably all grown up now with a husband and children and a last name of her own.

The griffin fountain with its prancing stone creatures spewing clear, bubbly water was still in a plaza surrounded by zelkova trees. It was the place Kirsten had asked to meet with Oulan.

The tall, red-haired woman sat down on the edge of the fountain where a light spray of water droplets splashed her shoulder blades. The garden district had a lot of fountains. They date back to Alfred Mercade's retirement when he saw how much pleasure they gave his visiting grandchildren. Oulan could remember how Susan had enjoyed them too. Susan had only been thirteen when Oulan departed from Harmonia. It had been so hard to tell the blue-eyed girl that she was moving on... She had almost decided to sneak off without telling anyone but the bishop that she was leaving, but at the last minute she had decided that was unfair to Susan.

Oh, they had loved each other... Oulan had been more than a bodyguard or babysitter to Susan. They were true friends. Even the bishop had left down his stern front enough around Oulan to let her in on something he had not even told Susan- that she was his illegitimate daughter. Oulan had been like a member of the household...but Susan didn't need to be looked after anymore and the bishop was growing a little concerned about the attention Oulan's striking looks and great physical strength was attracting to his daughter. Oulan understood and so she left.

Where was Susan now? How was she doing? Oulan would've liked to see her, but the city was large and the country was larger. She would've had no idea where to begin her search.

"Excuse me."

She looked up to see a little woman in wearing a beret gazing at her across the plaza. "You're Oulan, aren't you? I'm Kirsten."
