Mine did not know what song it was, or how long he had is ear pressed against her apartment door. What he did know was that as the violin fluttered through a measure of quick thirty-second notes and seamlessly transitioned at a meter change, he must have stopped breathing.
God, she was amazing. "Incredible," the rock violinist sighed enviously. Despite the fact that the piece was unknown, it sounded flawless. Everything exactly to the beat, each crescendo rising to the perfect volume, every sustained high note piercing him. It might not have been his style, but he realized the amount of skill it took to play like that. His eyelids started to lower as the song continued to envelop and seduce him. While his one hand clutched the handle of a metal box, the other tapped the odd beat on the wood, echoing into his ear and enhancing the feelings.
One-two-three -- one-and-two-and -- one-two-three...It was enchanting. At this time he started swaying, like he was dancing with the door. He sorely wished that he could play this. A strong desire in him was rising - so badly did he want to break down that door and ask- no, beg and plead that she become his-
"GAHH!!!"
The support of the door suddenly disappeared, and soon enough, the hardwood floor slapped Mine right in the face.
Groaning, Mine lifted his head to run his eyes up the figure in front of him, and once he reached the head, all he thought was, "Damn it."
Surprise flickered on her face. "Why are you lying down on my doorway?"
"See, I kind of fell..."
Mine awkwardly got back on his feet. "Also, I thought you might be hungry-" he lifted the metal box in his right hand. "-so I thought I should bring you some food from my dad's restaurant." He thrust out his arm, smiling slightly. "So enjoy."
"Oh...thank you." But when she didn't immediately take his offering, Mine glanced at her and saw her hands carrying her violin and bow. Suddenly he remembered why he stalked her to her apartment and listened in on her practice. Swallowing his pride, he dropped the box and fell to the floor on his knees.
"Miki Kiyora, please!" Mine burst out, head bowed low. "Teach me. Teach me how to make such beautiful sounds!"
She let out a tired sigh. "So that's what this is all about."
"I beg of you!" exclaimed Mine. "I promise it won't take up too much of your time!" Desperately, he grabbed her ankles and continued with his pleas.
"What the?!" she cried, horrified that a man was hugging her legs. Putting down her instrument on a side table nearby, Kiyora grabbed hold of the door for support as she tried to shake him off. "Let go of me!"
"I'll- I'll clean up your apartment for you! I'll give you dinner every night for a month- no, two months!"
"I've told you before, I'm not a teacher, now let go!"
"But I'll listen to you! Really! I want to learn from you. Kiyora, you play so skillfully and amazingly..."
At last, she managed to wiggle one foot out of his grasp. "Flattery is not going to work on me, now please leave!" the violinist yelled over his cries, despite the fact that a light blush had already spilled across her face. Ignoring his frantic pleas, she dragged him out into the hall where some passerby-ers raised their eyebrows.
"Let go," she struggled. "or, or it's a definite no!"
Finally, she was released. The begging had stopped abruptly - Mine mumbled an apology and breathed heavily as he kneeled in front of her.
She walked away and had her hand on her doorknob, when Kiyora glanced at him on the ground, sighing. "I'm sorry- Mine, was it? But I'm very busy with my own things. Furthermore, I don't want to teach. So...bye." She stepped back into her apartment, and slowly pushed the door closed.
"Wait."
Mine stuck his foot in the way and peered at her through the gap. Their gazes locked, their breathing tightened as though constricted by a chain, their hearts quickening. The air became warm between them. Everything felt...strange. He watched her eyes try to tear away from his and gulped at the sight of her cheeks reddening. It never occurred to Mine that she could possibly- just possibly be more than just a skillful violinist.
"N-now what?" she said in a whisper, face appearing stunned but impatient for his words.
"I..."
His mind was absolutely blank. As empty as a wasteland. He knew that whatever he would say next would determine his fate (with her at least), and there was no doubt in his mind that he was going to ruin it. Unable to think of anything else to say, Mine inhaled and stared directly in her eyes.
"Th...three months," he muttered.
Her face drained. "Sorry?" she asked, voice as sharp as daggers.
Why did it seem like this was the single worst answer he could've said? "I'll make it three months," Mine said, trying to remain cool. "Dinner every night." His face heated up. Oh man, it was over. But...maybe she'll humor him. Maybe. There's still a chance that she could say yes, right?
Obviously, Miki Kiyora was not amused.
Through bared teeth, she growled in an I've-lost-my-patience-with-you tone, "Thank you. For. The. Food." Plain and simply. And on that note, she pushed the door until Mine finally, for fear of losing a limb, squeezed his foot out of the way. The door shut with a gunshot-like bang. Mine was sure he heard the snap of a bolt as well.
Leaning back against the door and slumping down on the ground, he removed his shoe and massaged his squashed foot. "Oww," he hissed irritably. Damn, she's strong.
But he was still determined. Speaking loudly enough to be heard from inside, Mine called to Kiyora, "So, was that...a yes?"
He assumed that the screeching, messily-played chromatic scale meant "no."
END
A/N: Aw. Poor Mine :P I think I made Kiyora a little too meanbut this was BEFORE they slept with each other. I imagine they weren't exactly BFF's then XD I think I'll be doing another part to this. There really needs to be more Mine/Kiyora fics - and Nodame fics in general out there. >:O
