The girl at the gate had mud on her cheek and wore torn jeans, and Integra Hellsing found her altogether fascinating.

"Is this a school?" the girl asked her, twisting dark brown hair between her fingers.

"No, it's my home," Integra answered.

She gasped, and her eyes widened in surprise. "You must be very rich."

Integra thought she might leave after that, but she put her hands on the bars of the gate and said, "I'm Sarah, and I'm eight. How old are you?"

"I'm nine, and I'm Integra."

"That's a funny name," Sarah replied.

Integra glared at her for her rudeness, but she just grinned.

"If this isn't your school, then where do you go to school?"

"I have my lessons here," Integra replied. "With my tutor and my father." Integra already knew that some of her father's teachings were not to be shared with strangers.

Sarah glanced toward Hellsing manor. "Can I see inside?"

"No," said Integra. "But I'll show you the garden." She opened the gate.

They walked around the grass, skirting the edge of the cemetery on the grounds.

"Are these your family's graves?" Sarah asked.

"Some of them," Integra answered. "But I'd rather not walk through there right now."

"Are you afraid?"

Integra laughed. "Of course I'm not afraid. But my father makes me walk through it every week and it's very boring."

Under the nearby trees there was a collection of fallen leaves. A bit glad that the gardener had ignored this area, Integra led Sarah in crunching through them. The two girls began to laugh.

Suddenly, Sarah picked up a bunch of dry brown leaves and threw them at Integra's hair. Integra tried to be angry but ended up laughing again. Soon they were throwing leaves at each other like any other pair of silly children.

That was when Integra's father arrived.

"Who is this little girl?" he asked, when he finally got Integra's attention.

Integra dropped the leaves she was clutching. "She's Sarah."

"I'm sure Sarah's parents are looking for her."

"Not really," said Sarah cheerfully. "My mum's at work and-"

Arthur Hellsing shook his head and Sarah took the hint. She ran back toward the gate, calling a good-bye over her shoulder.

Integra, leaves still in her hair, stood in silence, wondering just how angry her father was. When he spoke, however, he merely sounded sad.

"Integra, if you need playmates I can invite the girls from the Round Table families."

"Why them? Because their fathers are all Sir somebody?"

"No, that's not it at all," he said. "It's because those families understand the seriousness of our mission."

"Whenever I meet those girls they act afraid of me."

"They should be. You are stronger than any of them. And you must always stay strong. But you must also always control yourself and make people think of the Hellsing name with respect."

"I know I'm going to be the next Sir Hellsing. You keep telling me."

"Then act with dignity, as a knight should," her father replied.

"Like you did when you were young?"

Her father gave a little laugh. "I'm talking about you, not me."

Integra nodded. Family came before anything, and if that meant dignity came before fun, that was all that she needed to know. But she still looked wistfully back at the gate for a moment, and said, "They were only leaves."
