When Detective Hidari led the police raid on the illegal brothels near the harbour, he had not been expecting to net a mermaid among the forty six trafficked women.
Contrary to legend, her tears did not turn into pearls; and apparently even a sniffling mermaid had to blow her nose as well.
"...I..I first met him in Tokyo Bay," she sobbed. "He had a cement block tied to his feet and he was drowning."
Officer Teremoto, who was transcribing, had a sudden coughing fit.
"So I rescued him and brought him to the beach, and I stayed until he woke up -- I know I shouldn't have, but he was so much better-looking than my ex, even without any gills or tail..."
"The facts, please," Detective Hidari interrupted. "Why did you end up in House Lotus?"
"He said he was used to taking care of mermaids like me," said the mermaid, beginning on a new handkerchief. "There were plenty of girls just like me, who get smuggled in every year on boats and he could get me papers and a job, no questions asked. And when I told him a needed a watery environment, he said he could take care of that too."
Officer Teremoto's coughing fit made a return.
"I mean, life in the Soapland* wasn't really all that bad -- I never dried out, and he was really devoted to me. I-I thought that was the only way, to be with him. But.."
"But?"
"He wasn't happy still, was he? Even though it was the only way he knew how to live."
"No," said Detective Hidari. "There's no helping a man like him. Some people are like that; no matter how they try, everything comes out crooked."

A week later, Goro Ishida jumped bail. There was no trace of him; his cronies had neither seen hide nor hair since he left to meet some girl of his. When his belongings were searched, the only clue was a note with traces of sea salt.
Come to the sea.
It was rare for Detective Hidari to wish a yakuza every happiness, but then, the Little Mermaid was his daughter's favourite movie.
