[June 30, 2007][Suikoden] Ascent
Title: Ascent
Day/Theme: June 30, 2007 "work out your own salvation with fear and trembling"
Series: Suikoden
Character/Pairing: Sasarai
Rating: G
Sasarai tied the white scarf reverently over his head. Looking in the mirror, he suddenly caught his breath. He looked just like his father in his youth. He and his father had lived very differently in the days before they donned this scarf. He was a bishop, a general, a politician- his father had been a soldier and a peasant. Putting on the scarf would not make him his father. Nor would the title or the ceremony. And the power would not make him his father either, at least that was what he told himself.
He pinched his arm and winced to remind himself that this was not a dream. His beloved blue hat had been set aside on his desk to be replaced with the scarf. He was fairly sure it was the same one his father had been given by Saint Hirano Ausglean so many years ago, but due to the great age of that gift, he could not know for certain. His usual blue and white robes had been replaced for the day by radiant white, gold, and silver. Like the clothing he had enjoyed as a child, the sleeves hung down over his fingers and the ends of the robes covered his feet, trailing slightly on the ground. He had never seen his father dressed like this. The times he saw Hikusaak, the ancient man was most often in slippers and a dressing robe, possibly with the scarf still on his head. He did not go out much and did not bother to exhibit much finery. The clothes seemed like those of the heavenly messenger from a book he had read as a boy. All he needed was a golden halo and wispy wings of light.
Of course, he had little faith in the faces of housiiobou anymore. The man who had seemed most like one to him in days gone by had proved to be the least of their kind. He had known that looks could be deceiving, but an experience of the sort he had had with Inquisitor General Wednesday was sobering.
"Sasarai, we're waiting for you," came the voice of Lucas Orsini accompanying a series of swift knocks. "Anytime you're ready."
The brunette rubbed a hand over his face. He knew why he was doing this, but that didn't mean he was entirely sure it was the right thing to do. He straightened the scattered items in front of his mirror, a brush, a pair of scissors, a few extra handkerchiefs, and then headed to the door. Lucas was leaning against the opposite wall and his eyes widened a little when Sasarai left his room. The Orsini man was well-dressed, a fashionable white scarf adding something extra to his official robes. "You look good," he said, sounding a bit puzzled for some reason Sasarai did not know.
Sasarai smiled to thank Lucas for the compliment and they began to walk down the hall together toward the Temple cathedral. The only sound was the tap of their boots on the tile. Each man was wrapped up in his own thoughts. Sasarai could not help but feel a little scared.
They passed out of the main building and across the grass. The wide Temple doors were propped open and flanked by several guards. As they approached, the crowds packed into and around the cathedral turned in fascination. Sasarai could only hope now that he would not fail. He was about to accept the heaviest burden a man could carry. The people were smiling and cheering at the arrival of the man who was about to be appointed Harmonia's new chief priest.
Sasarai felt his knees grow weak.
