Series: Suikoden

"Dios, do you remember in Higheast when you told me that times change?" Sasarai asked seriously, putting down his notebook and pen. His expression was calm, but his eyes were fierce.

Dios wondered if this might be one of his employer's loaded questions. He swallowed hard and paused to see if he could get out of saying anything. Sasarai continued to look intently at the blond man. ...A response of some sort was definitely expected. "Yes, it was after the battle at Sedgepond," he answered dutifully.

"That was very astute of you," the bishop replied. The fire in his eyes seemed to cool a little. "I can nothing now about all the blood on my hands as a general of Harmonia. That is past. But I will cleanse our policy."

"Err, yes, sir?" Dios was not sure whether he was agreeing with or questioning the idea. He was absolutely clueless as to what Sasarai might do to change Harmonian policy in such a sweeping manner or how he would actually accomplish it. Surely there would be many moderate and conservative minds set against it.

"The House of Representatives is faltering due to in-fighting in the new Counsel. I have already received several secret requests from Counsel members who feel that the theocracy can be successfully led by only one man. And when they look about for a new chief priest, I am that man," he explained, with a solemnness that could almost be called sorrow marking his final emphasis. "I never dreamt that I could hold that post, not even in the interim like this while new solutions were sought and my father slept. I am not worthy, but I cannot refuse." His eyes grew cold as he fixed their focus sharply on Dios once more, "Absolute power corrupts absolutely, Dios," he said, "I hope you will watch over me as I move forward."

"Yes, of course, Your Excellency!" Dios practically shouted, "I will support you as best I can! As will Nika! And you know there will be others. I think you will be fine. You won't wield such power unwisely."

"But the times may change," Sasarai sighed, "And what was once wise may then appear quite foolish."
