[June 27, 2007][Suikoden] Eggplant Empathy

Title: Eggplant Empathy
Day/Theme: June 27, 2007 "Who is weak, and I am not weak? who is offended, and I burn not?"
Series: Suikoden
Character/Pairing: Sasarai and Florenz
Rating: G

Florenz was bandaged tightly and healing well in the tent hospital set up at the colony. Sasarai had shown up while the rebel soldier was sleeping. A nurse brought him a stool and he sat down quietly to await Florenz's awakening. He had carried with him a basket of cucumbers and eggplants with a few leaves and blossoms still attached. He thought it would be a nice gift for someone on the path to recovery.

Awake and speaking, Florenz seemed strong and optimistic, but sleeping he looked frail and overly young. He had smooth hands and long eyelashes. Sasarai clearly remembered his first battle fought in Highland alongside the Blight family. It was easy to relieve his own weakness and inexperience.

Florenz sneezed, then opened his eyes.

"Good morning," the bishop greeted him, "I'm glad to see that your injuries are improving so rapidly."
The rebel rubbed his eyes and sat up cautiously. "Cucumbers! And eggplants! How did you know that I like eggplant?"

Sasarai shrugged. He had not known. It was simply a spot of good luck. "No sleuthing on my part. I just made a good guess." He handed Florenz the basket and enjoyed the pleasant feelings involved in gifts along with him. In all these emotions he was experiencing with the younger man, it was not so much that he was trying to live vicariously, but that he wanted very much to be empathetic. It was the most vital skill of a good leader in Sasarai's opinion.

"I can't wait to eat these!" Florenz thanked his unexpected guardian. "It's so nice of you to come out and see me again. I can't see what I possibly could've done to deserve this. I'm just a common foot soldier in this army."

"To me, common people are the most important," Sasarai smiled, "I want to get my priorities straight. To understand the people like you is to know the nation. I am doing my utmost to get Harmonia on its feet again."

"Heh heh, you're funny, Lord Sasarai. You won't join the Konserase, you won't be a rebel, you're going to change Harmonia all by yourself!" he laughed.

Sasarai hoped he didn't seriously mean it as a joke.
