Yes, we must bide our time. Ever has it been simple to rush in unaware of the trips and traps and dangers that might await us in the dark, but we must show our self control and wait for the right moment. Wait, rest, be at peace.

These were the things the voices told me, echoing lightly off the black and silver stones. I was not so patient as these, but I would obey. I took off my hat and scuffed at the dirt with the toe of my shoe. I was ashamed to be the only one of our people in my state. The others had achieved a higher condition than I. They were spirits and I was only a scruffy young man with clothes that did not fit me particularly well. And as a physical form, it was my job to do their bidding in all the matters they could no longer attend to as a part of their state of being. I often tired of the errands they sent me on. I was a man being directed hither and thither by the inside of a cave after all. It was not something one could easily explain to others outside the community.

The only person I encountered often who did not seem put off by this nonsense was the king's son, Xalinn. He was perfectly tolerant of the whole bizarre affair and rarely so much as mentioned it. Of course, he wasn't my friend. The only reason we had anything to do with each other at all was because he had seen me reading runic letters, the usual alphabet of my people. He had peculiar interest in magic and runes. He pestered me to translate for him every time he saw me. There was magic in his blood, but he seemed unable to tap into it no matter how he studied. I think it was too thin. My people agreed when I questioned them about it. The magic in the king's blood was thin as well. I did not inform Xalinn about my own magical abilities, since they came quite naturally due to my heritage and I felt the lack of learning I had needed to use them would've thoroughly annoyed him. I liked his kind attention, though I wished I could dissuade him from caring so deeply about the words on the walls. I couldn't help but glad to leave the spirits of my people behind for a time to bask in the light of the Starseeker.
