Still continuing...

I didn't know where Anabel was. She was being low profile, but since it was her party, she still tried to act the courteous hostess, asking "Are you having a good time?" and, "Would you like some punch? I promise none of the Rihakans have poisoned it and none of the people of Orange have spiked it." Which made the guests giggle because they had probably been to at least one party in Orange and its demesnes where the punch packed more of a wallop than they expected.

I edged around the dance floor as a quick, tuneful number stirred the masqueraders to dance. I suppose l should've savored my only opportunities to see the masked equivalents of a dancing shark, birch tree, and dragonfly, but my mind was so full of other things I neglected to do more than glance at them. I nearly bumped into a thin and shimmering fish as I stood on tiptoe to peer above the heads of the taller guests. A pink flamingo not far away looked suspiciously like Anabel even from behind, but before I could pursue her, I was yanked back to sights closer to my eye level.

"Hey," I was greeted by a tiger-masked stranger who had tugged on my sleeve to get my attention.

"Hello," I replied, realizing the voice was familiar. It belonged to a young man who was probably one of the best-known people in the Asterage region who did not rule a country. "Kojiro, you make a nice tiger."

"Aww, you think?" the merchant chuckled. He had thin, black bands painted on his upper arms to compliment the mask. He still wore the usual yellow and orange striped scarf like a headband.

"Wind-Bell is around her somewhere. She's a frog. The Hollarnjin didn't get it, so they're just wearing some plain colored masks the doorman handed them."

"Did Duskany receive our invitation?" I inquired.

"I'm fairly sure he did, but he's tied up with some mercenary matter in Quetland right now. As far as I know, he couldn't make it."

I was glad to speak to Kojiro once more and especially pleased at the kinder nature three relatively peaceful years had given him. It was obvious he had grown up since that blustery day we met at the checkpoint when he had not wanted to ask us to be his allies.
