"I think I know what the problem was with us."

Cameron looked up from the patient's file and rolled her eyes. "It's Monday. You're not allowed to start up about this on Monday."

"Look, stop acting like you hate me," Chase insisted.

"I never said I hated you. In fact, I want us to be able to work together even though we had sex."

"Lots of sex. Good sex," said Chase. "But what I should have done is offer you a little, you know, consensual pain."

"What the hell are you talking about?" asked Cameron, bending her head over the file again. "Spicing up our sex life was not going to help. Like you just said, it wasn't the sex that was bad. It was you taking the whole thing too seriously."

"You're clearly a masochist," Chase went on.

"Has anyone ever told you that you're not very funny?" she asked.

"House has. Over and over. But listen... you like to be in pain. You keep going after House, even though you know he would only hurt you if he were even interested, and then there was-"

Cameron interrupted. "If you mention my husband this conversation is over. In fact it's over now."

"You're just like any other woman who ignores a good man in favor of someone who's only going to break her heart," Chase insisted.

"That's not the same thing as being a masochist," she muttered.

"You're admitting women don't go for nice guys?"

"If they don't, it's because all some so-called nice guys ever talk about is how nice they are and how they can't get a woman."

"Why are you in love with House?" he asked in an intense voice.

"I'm not."

"Just tell me the truth for once. Don't you owe me that?"

"No," Cameron replied. "I don't owe you anything, actually. But if I were in love with House, which I'm not, maybe it would be because he's intelligent and comes through for his patients when it counts, or because he doesn't take crap from anyone."

"But you're not in love with him," Chase said with a laugh.

"I'm not in love with his pain, or with being hurt myself. I've grown out of that. I can tell you that much."

"I think maybe you're not entirely lying about that part," he said in a musing tone.

"Meaning what?"

"Meaning I don't have a chance," he sighed.

"I keep telling you that." Cameron's face softened slightly. "Look, you actually are a good person, but even if I were in love with House-"

"Which you're not," he said sarcastically.

"Right, but that wouldn't be why I'm not in love with you."

"I wish I could say you were lying about that, too."

Cameron just shook her head. "It's really over."

"The conversation?" asked Chase.

"Everything."

Chase still looked uncomfortable, but this time he just nodded and left the room.
