Nemu looked surprised when Sumika first told her she was expecting a baby.
"What is it like?" she asked shyly. "I've read that women get sick. But of course I wouldn't really know."
There was an awkward silence while they both processed the fact that new Haibane did not start as babies, and that Nemu herself would never give birth.
"Well, I do have trouble keeping food down," Sumika said finally, sounding uncertain.
She was worried that perhaps she had offended Nemu, but the next day there was a special cake waiting for her on her desk, light and delicious.
