[05/11/07] [Original Roleplay] Of the Seven Seas
Title: Of the Seven Seas
Day/Theme: May 11: all other perils and misfortunes of the sea
Series: Original roleplay
Character/Pairing: Ianthe/Paolo
Rating: PG
Note: Briefly mentions Neve, Ian and Reilly, characters that belong to my friend Joey. I am the creator of all the rest and the crazy island game that they partake in. The Enkeli Everto is a tribe on that island of creatures like angels and demons (winged beings with influence over others). The selkies are obviously part human, part seal (in our universe they have short lifespans).
Before she met Neve, Ian, and Reilly, before she'd gotten mixed up with the island, Ianthe's life had been fairly unique. She didn't think it could get much more amazing than being a world class model living in New York City and being as free as she could possibly be. She wasn't aware that her secret life, her carefully hidden reality would become so much more important.
She'd done her best to deny it for years. If she didn't swim too far off shore the pull of the sea couldn't claim her. For a selkie her will power was fairly impressive, something Paolo had always admired.
He was far weaker than she; he had no compunction about admitting it.
They had been friends for such a very long time (which considering the short lifespan of their ilk was not very long). Paolo knew her every laugh, her every smile. He knew the little white lies she told and what a very good actress she'd become with their little charade.
They'd been living among humans as if they were humans for the entire length of their lives. Only when they were far out in the harbors would they dare to change their form and swim freely as seals, always smart to stray away from boats and nets.
It only made sense that they travel together. When she decided to follow Reilly back to his mystical homeland, an island he spoke of with such reverence, Paolo had no choice but to go with them. They were after all, bound in marriage and bound in deep friendship.
Their marriage was merely a front to their parents that they might live their own lives independently, where they desired and how they desired. As long as they were together their over-protective and openly biased parents felt safe. "They'll make more selkies. The tribe will carry on," they convinced each other over bottles of vino and dishes of caviar.
Ianthe and Paolo had no intentions of having children together. Despite the fact that they wanted to please their parents in some peculiar way, it was out of the question. Ianthe had her own plans for the future and Paolo was far too gay to even entertain the sort of entanglements that would result in children.
Looking back, she almost wished they had. Anything to have a piece of Paolo in her life again. She'd chosen wings and eternity over fins and a short life span. She picked the air and the bright valley where the Enkeli lived over the racing heartbeat that always accompanied a swim in the sea. She couldn't swim with the great gray wings that had grown from her back as her mind was made up. She couldn't take back the fact that Paolo couldn't go with her this time.
His life was the sea. His life was with the tribe on the island, his love.
When he reached the end of a long and fruitful life for the selkie kind he died with his old friend at his side. Her life was only just beginning and her favorite person in the world had already left her. It was the only regret Ianthe Kirke would ever know.
