He had always had trouble talking about important things. Then, what he loved most had been taken from him. It had made him realize how important everything was. Then, what had been just an occasional stumbling of speech fell into a stutter.
Everything was important. Every inch of plumbing in the old complex. Every motley soul that took shelter there. He took care of it as best he could, remembering what he hadn’t been there to protect. Then, he met Story.
She was important too. He could sense it. Just trying to describe her, to put words to the feelings she invoked, to the intrinsic aura of significance she carried made him choke. She affected everyone that way, fortunately, so he didn’t have to try to tell what she was like. He just had to step aside and let them see her, and watch them sputter for a change.
