The earthy streak in Li Ping was too strong for her to wax poetic on how the desert sun was never reflected in soft rays, or how the tent dwellers were as fierce and proud as the towering rocky hills. She simply accepted this harsh climate, and the equally hardy people, as her new niche in life.

Her son she left to adapt to it as best as he could. That he did so effortlessly inspired in her not pride but a grim satisfaction. Jing-er was possessed of both physical sturdiness and uncompromising integrity, which were almost enough to substitute for his patent lack of intelligence.

"A true warrior," she murmured after a morning prayer before her husband's shrine. "A person who'd fit utterly into the Mongolian and Han societies at the moment. I fear I am not allowed to ask for more."
