[April 25, 2007][Suikoden] Sahi, the First Bearer

Title: Sahi, the First Bearer
Day/Theme: April 25, 2007 heaven sent
Series: Suikoden
Character/Pairing: Hikusaak, Sasarai
Rating: G

"The first bearer was a man who watched the stars from the roof of a city near what is now Riverway. There were no telescopes back then and so he observed with the naked eye. He drew by the light of a fat, wax candle, making diagrams of what he saw, for he believed God was up there among the stars," whispered Hikusaak to the boy perched on his knee.

The boy listened eagerly to the words of this most awe-inspiring man: hero, priest, founder, saint, prophet, and father. The Circle Rune listened as well, enjoying the conceit of hearing its own story.

"Like a star, the Circle Rune fell glimmering toward the earth, striking the man on the head and overwhelming him with the aura of its power so that he passed out. Awakening later he discovered the mark of the Circle Within Circles upon his brow and terrified as it spoke to him, anointing him as a prophet of the Eternal. However, the words of the Circle were strengthening and he gradually accepted the way and the will. The Circle directed him to Crystal Valley, which at that time was a more rocky area than it is now, with no people, and sent him to a small lake at its center in which the heavens were reflected. In this mirror of stars the man began to see visions which the Circle instructed him to speak of openly to the people. He began to speak inspired words and drew others to him, becoming revered as holy. He asked for a place of worship to be built around the mirror of stars and this became the first foundation of the Temple. He became the first chief priest."
"What was his name?" asked the boy.

"Sahi," replied the current chief priest. The rune remembered Sahi. Hikusaak found his mind distracted by the residual memories of Sahi, the faintest of all the bearers for his cycle was earliest. There was the cold stone of the ledges he scrambled awkwardly down to reach the grassy valley floor, for Sahi was not especially nimble, and there was the sticky, warm scent of cheap candles melting down to nothing but puddles of wax in the first incarnation of the Temple. Hikusaak had grown used to these vicarious experiences. Sahi's cycle had not been as long as his own. The second disciple of Sahi was the next bearer until his murder- that was Soon Huang. Then came a mischievous bearer- Kaiusan... There had been more than he would speak of to the boy. His son would have been to learn of them through books. He would have to prepare to guard a new cycle himself one day.
