"The truth." Zhao Min twirled a lock of hair around her finger, mischievously rather than flirtatiously. "Which of us four is the most captivating to behold?"

"You know I can only give frank answers to that sort of question."

"So it's not me! Brother Wuji, I am disappointed. All this time and you still pine for Miss Zhou. Or is it Xiaozhao?"

"Does a girl need to have outstanding beauty to make a man feel she's the greatest gift he has ever been favored with?"

"Sly! And yet I will readily admit that Xiaozhao is surpassingly elegant, once she's out of her maidservant's garb. Your poor cousin would've been ravishing had it not been for her disfigurement. As for Miss Zhou, we both know how you regard the dear thing. Yes, I can see how fate has neatly left you with no other choice but me, and you, gentleman that you are, nobly rise to the challenge."

It pleased her when he smiled, so he did. "Since you ask me to be truthful," he said, "I beg a different perspective on what fate has chosen for me."
