[April 24, 3007][Original] Time to Stay Indoors
Title: Time to Stay Indoors
Day/Theme: April 24, 2007 listening to the rain
Series: Original, continued from "The Young Lord"
Character/Pairing: Cara
Rating: G
The following day it rained. Cara watched the water droplets splash off the roof and onto the round as she split the chunks of wood she had brought back the day before. Occasionally a cool breeze sent the rain sliding diagonally through the air and under the eves dampening her arms and the wood.
"I thought we were done with rain for this year," she muttered gloomily to herself. It was weather like this that made her really wonder if the events of the day before had been a dream. In a world where musicians brought messages from the king and the smiling Lord Thomas seemed pleased to meet her in a room like a fairytale princess' parlor there was no place for such an ugly brown sky or unruly rain that would not fall straight.
The guards passed hourly through the yard, churning the wet dirt into a thick mud that clung to their heavy metal-tipped boots and left stains on their cloaks when it was kicked into the air. When the ground dried, it would be heavily scarred and would have to be shoved and pounded flat so no horse would twist an ankle in one of the holes.
Cara tossed the last few pieces of firewood onto the pile. She ducked into her home quickly, bringing out a piece of gray burlap to cover the wood with. It would be best to keep it as dry as possible.
Unless anyone asked for her specifically, Cara decided she was going to stay quietly indoors for the rest of the day. She took off her boots in the doorway and left them to the side of the mat. No sense in tracking mud all over the tiny hut. She sat down on her bed and pulled a box out from beneath the mattress. She had to lick her fingers to smooth together the fraying ends of the thread before she could thread it through the needle, but in a few minutes she was smoothly sewing away, mending a tear in one of her tunics.
The rain continued to tap and click noisely on the roof.
