Sanne set up her camera in an almost hidden, tunnel-like alley. She’d made sure it was easy to miss, because she didn’t want to be noticed. Above her, on the overhanging tarps and balconies, the rain came down loudly; on the street in front of her, it was dry.

The sunlight had that particular gold tint to it that meant ‘it will rain here soon’. She thought it was perfect. The people out in the streets were fussing about with umbrellas and hoods, or finding shelter in bus stops and the like.

She focussed on a group of girls huddling under an obscenely large umbrella, laughing cheerily and half-heartedly trying to push one another out from under it. Click. It wasn’t raining yet, but it wouldn’t be long, and one of them’d probably succeed, so she made a note to check again.

Click. A man and a woman arguing in front of a bus stop, both gesturing broadly and speaking loud enough that she could hear fragments of their fight. Click, click, click.

Young girl and her dog hurrying home before the rain started. Click. Now she was running up the stairs outside her house. Click, click.

The rhythm of the rain was pleasant, she decided, catching two young men in conflict with a map. Click. Click, when they fled into the ice cream parlour on the corner when it really did start to rain.

Click. She’d been right; the girls under the huge umbrella hadn’t moved more than three feet, and one of them was sitting on the sidewalk, glowering at the others.
