One moment a glorious outpouring of benediction on dry soil; the next, tiny drops of water sliding off blades of grass, forgotten and unseen, until the next shower. While humans might perish, the names and deeds they left behind would bear testimony that they once lived and were of use.

"That includes pulling out weeds," said Qiu Chuji. He was almost inconceivably young then, not even past fifteen. "Driving away pests and lopping heads off jackals. Isn't that right?"

"The rain," Wang Chongyang replied, "purifies. It washes away the remaining foulness and keeps the earth clean."

"To be able to do that, it has to be a massive thunderstorm. Preferably every time."

Wang Chongyang dismissed him. His disciple would gradually learn that humans could often tear the sky apart, but not always.
