Like a little girl, she collected fallen chestnuts and arranged them into two small piles on the ground, counting under her breath. She was the only other disciple in a fighting school possessing rare, fluid techniques most suited for women; she was no great beauty and she limped, most visibly so when she was exhausted. She once loved a man who would always think of her - out of pity - as a sister; she was blessed with a cousin dearer and more caring than anyone else.

When she had time, instead of scattering away the chestnuts - which would somehow be petty - she disassembled them and started the counting all over again. Her cousin would have approved, and at those times she could have hated the older woman for that.
