But James did not know. John Rusalier had not yet made it home that morning. He had been on a little excursion along the green banks of the Oprios River to engage in one of his favorite pastimes: fishing for eel. News had arrived on the previous afternoon from a fast-running page that his father's illness had grown so severe that he was unlikely to make it and John had pack up camp, heading straight for his home. He traveled on foot with just one guard, but their pace was not sufficient. By the time John threw open the heavy wooden door to his father's bedroom, the fifty-four-year-old duke was dead. It was the third hour past noon.

"So you finally made it back," Duke Varic's minister of finances muttered. He did not think much of John and this did little to alter his overall impression of the youth. He blamed John's deficiencies as an heir largely on his late mother, Lady Lih, and what seemed to be a general lack of intelligence.

John frowned, crinkling up his freckled face in annoyance and sorrow. His father had just passed away that night and Ruar was already giving him attitude. He knew Ruar did not think too much of him, but the polite thing to do would be to keep it to himself. John was not stupid, just somewhat naive- he was only fifteen, after all, and he had never left the dukedom.

He ignored Ruar and walked slowly to the edge of the bed. It was certainly his father lying there, his face stern as usual, even in death. His closed eyes seemed somewhat sunken into his head and his skin was alabaster white. It was hard to believe he was really dead, even with the body right in front of him. John swallowed a sob. The first tear ran down his face and then he hiccuped. His face began to blotch up pink and red as more tears streamed down his cheeks. Duke Varic had never been that close to his son, but that did not stop John from caring. The duke was the only family he had...now he was alone. He continued to cry quietly, hiccups breaking through his sobs. Ruar arose from the stool where he had been perched and left the room, leaving John alone with his tears and his memories.
