Castles on Strong Foundations
Hikaru had always thought he could never hate Kaoru.
They were brothers, after all, and twins. They had been one in birth and still now they were closer than most, cleaving to each other when the rest of the world tore at their barriers, striking tender areas so cautiously revealed, guards so hesitantly lowered. When no one else understood, Hikaru knew Kaoru would; whether Hikaru was irrational or afraid, frustrated or despairing, Kaoru would always be there. This was the fruit of a love that came from an unbreakable, unquestioned bond. Hikaru had always believed in it, in Kaoru.
The first time he questioned, the first time a chink appeared in those bonds (bonds that looked like chains now, heavy and all-consuming) was when Kaoru pushed him away, towards Haruhi.
He’d said it was because he wanted Hikaru to be happy, to realize a world outside of their own, to experience life and love outside of Kaoru. Hikaru believed him. But it was also because Kaoru wanted to be selfish. He wanted his own time, his own life, his own experiences outside of Hikaru…
It was true that Hikaru could never hate Kaoru, but he would always hate Ootori Kyouya.
