I wasn’t ready. So much was unsaid between us and I couldn’t even decide where to start. Patience had never come easily to Esme and when the silence went on a bit too long, she got up to go and hugged me.
I should’ve hugged her back, but she was gone so quickly. Just like last time. Here one moment, then gone.
After all this, I suppose I haven’t any right to ask for more of her time. She devoted ten years to me. Still, if there’s a ‘kick me’ note on the back of my coat now, I’ll kill her.
