[April 17] [Original] As one wishes

Title: As one wishes
Day/Theme: April 17 - As one wishes
Series: Endtimes (Original Work)
Character/Pairing: Aidan Clayce & Rethe Kyriff
Rating: G

Aidan Clayce was a Voidseeker — therefore, he was far from oblivious. As such, he did notice the way his partner gazed off at the small specialty bookstore on the other side of the street from the Hunter’s café. He just never called the boy on it.

They had entered the bookstore for the first time a few years ago, when things had still been a little strange between them following another revolution and a new set of almost tragedies (one being the fact that Rethe had nearly killed Aidan) to deal with. The bookstore owner was a scholar and a romantic but otherwise decent mouse of a fellow, genuinely interested in catering to the literary tastes of the readers in the district. It became Rethe’s favorite place beyond Netsach’s own extensive library, and it wasn’t long before the youth was the owner’s best customer, with benefits that extended towards spending nearly every waking hour in the store undisturbed and borrowing the rarer titles for leisure reading.

Business had been going remarkably well for the man since the store’s opening, but some pressing family matters now required him to close up and leave Arcis. All of his customers were saddened by the news, but none of them were as deeply affected by it as Rethe was. The boy had even mentioned (to Lia and not to Aidan, but Aidan being a Voidseeker found out anyway) that he seemed to be in the habit of losing friends to unavoidable circumstances.

So it was that Aidan disappeared for a bit to make particular arrangements and a few days later the man took off early from their usual patrol route to bring Rethe to the bookstore on what was supposed to be its last day. To Rethe’s surprise, his partner did not leave him there and even accompanied him inside rather than return to Netsach to finish his paperwork.

“I wonder where the owner is,” said Rethe after a few minutes of wandering about, checking between the shelves and deserted floors.

“Well,” Aidan returned from where he stood in the doorframe, “You happen to be looking at him.”

There was a different sort of joy to be experienced in witnessing the slow dawn of disbelief, bewilderment, and then utmost happiness in Rethe’s expression at his words. Aidan continued on in all seriousness as he ventured further inside, pretending that he didn’t see a thing.

“Jonathan and I talked about the shop for a while… he really didn’t want to see it go under, but with his family in the state they are they needed his support. I’ve offered to partner with him in running the shop: he will handle the shipping from his end, and I will watch over the store. Of course, that means that you can keep whatever books you want to for yourself.”

The first thing Rethe did the moment Aidan was close enough was hug the man, tightly, with all the strength he had in his lean frame. There was no need for words.
