Her father had been blunt about her marriage. "It may make you less of a spoiled, selfish little madam." Her mother was more tactful, and equally optimistic. "Since Qi-er is such a decent and upright man, I'm certain you're going to benefit from being his wife."

Guo Fu bowed and thanked them for their blessings; being humble was a newly learned art, and she was currently fumbling her way through. It made her into various persons all at once - the stern older sister, the bashful bride-to-be, the repentant daughter. While her parents would never find fault with that, she was not comfortable yet with these transposing images, their somewhat lurking falsity.

Conforming to the wishes of others, too, would be jarringly new for her.
