Fifth Ending
Henry looks out the window at the darkness. He thinks he remembers light, but he isn't sure. Then he walks to the front door and opens it.
Walter speaks. "Mom won't stay if the door is open and closed."
He shuts the door. There's nothing out there anyway.
"Eileen is mother today," Walter says brightly.
She always is. Walter lies down on the couch, with his head in Eileen's lap so she can stroke his hair. Henry sits by her feet, hoping for attention, but she's cooing to Walter in her sing-song voice.
"Guess who's Mommy's favorite today? You are!"
