[April 10, 2007][Original] The Rise and Fall of Anabel Haznable
Title: The Rise and Fall of Anabel Haznable
Day/Theme: April 10, 2007 recollection of light
Series: Original
Character/Pairing: Anabel, Hazama, Kojiro
Rating: PG
Author's comments: Another Anabel-Hazama-Kojiro sort of piece for this month. I was trying to copy the style of Will Cuppy's The Rise and Fall of Practically Everybody in this- hence all the silly foot-notes. Afterward I realized it probably would've been funnier to write about a corrupt pseudo-historical figure, but oh well...
Anabel Haznable was the daughter of Sim-Val Haznable, the king of Eastirrim, and his wife, a lady of little political importance.*1 Sim-Val was a popular and strong-minded king, like the other Haznables before him, but not particularly savvy to the political goals of neighboring Rihaku. This led to his being poisoned.*2
In the mass chaos of the Rihakan invasion, Hazama Missaru, a member of Sim-Val's government who though liked by the king was little more than a clerk, spirited the young Anabel away into the seaside's mountainous region. Anabel learned to hang glide here and became a dedicated member of the resistance, quickly rising from nominal leader to the actual head.*3 She fought for Eastirrim's independence on many quiet fronts and during 271 she joined up with the Rihakan rebel force, the Green Bough Army, to fight back more publicly. With Higashi's Princess Saskia, Anabel liberated her country and became queen with Hazama as her chief minister. She let the country settle down after the years of tumult and was the most popular Haznable in the nation's history, but she died at about thirty with no heirs.*4 Her decision was that she be succeeded by Hazama.*5 He refused kingship and called himself the regent- the temporary holder of the throne.
Much has been made of Anabel's close relationship with Hazama, a man nearly fifteen years her senior, but as only good politics came of it, who are we to judge?*6 Despite the tales romanticizing Anabel's life that insist she was a beauty, the image of her as a pale-faced angel must be thrown away.*7 Anabel was in reality rather plain and tomboyish.*8 Her own documents indicate that too much sun gave her freckles and Hazama's biographical sketches of his beloved queen say that she never wore a crown except on the day of her coronation.*9 Most of our personal information about Anabel comes from Hazama's writings. He wrote volumes about the times he lived in, but only a small book about Anabel marked by delicate detail. It was dedicated to Kojiro Nire with this note, "That you might better understand her, because she always likes you." Kojiro is said to have cried at Anabel's funeral, but it was a rainy day so this tale cannot be verified.*10 He carried a copy of Hazama's volume for the rest of his life, tucked into his favorite jacket.*11
*1: Very little is recorded about Mrs. S. Haznable, who was killed during the Rihakan invasion. Palace financial records indicate she was very fond of chocolate.
*2: Misunderstanding Rihaku may do that to you. If you understand their goals, you just end up occupied.
*3: She was sharper than her father.
*4: This should not have surprised anyone at this point. The Haznables never had many children and if she had none at thirty, she was probably never going to have any.
*5: She did not specify what he should succeed her as.
*6: He was not rewarded with either land or money, so why should the public complain?
*7: The only ones espousing this view are the cheap dime novel historians anyway.
*8: Her short hairstyle was not popular with women at that time.
*9: Her favorite headgear was a stiff, yellow hat.
*10: I say he did.
*11: In his History of the Green Bough Rebels, Dr. J. Aronsen says he didn't cry, but Dr. J. Aronsen does not have a romantic bone in his body.
