He came into the control room, soft-footed in his new shoes and clothing, to see Rose staring thoughtfully at the gridded floor. It wasn't even a look of speculation; it was a look of planning, of anticipation.
She had already found ways to ask him about it. She had been subtle. She had been blatant. Her eyes were soft with desire and her hands covetous with longing.
Of course, she wouldn't remember the pain now, or the glory, but only the surety and certainty of power, of being the singularity among the wheeling stars.
And he knew: she couldn't stay.
